Job summary

The Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR) delivers animal handling training for more than 400 personnel and role specific training for hundreds of Animals per year. The unit is a joint service establishment with serving personnel from several Army regiments and the RAF Police. Comprising of Canine, Equine and Veterinary squadrons this post provides an opportunity to work in an environment like no other!
Working within this dynamic environment you will ensure that in accordance with the 5 freedoms of animal welfare, the highest standards of health and hygiene are maintained for our Military Working Horses (MWH). We are looking for someone who is able to identify, and report concerns or signs of adverse welfare or health to the Veterinary Training Squadron and are able to demonstrate an understanding of bio security. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description

1.To ride, exercise and school horses as and when required to include roadwork, canter work, show jumping, cross country training, lunging, loose exercising and pack animal handling indoors, outdoors and in all weather conditions.

2. Responsible for trimming, clipping, mane and tail pulling when required or when requested by other staff.

3. Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of stables, stable areas and equipment issued and to report any faults to the line manager.

4. Assist instructional staff with individual training of horses at various levels of their schooling.

5. Carry out instructions given by responsible officers concerning the conveyance of horses to and from the Veterinary Hospital for treatment. Facilitate the welfare of horses at grass, their movement to new pasture, the forge and stables.

6. Assist with care of newly purchased horses and any other stable duties as required.

7. Assist with the preparation and delivery of events held at the DATR.

The successful applicant will be prepared to work crucial overtime at weekends and bank holidays on a roster basis.

Person specification

This post requires the ability to feed, groom, handle, conduct health checks and exercise horses of various breeds, sizes and temperaments. As well as the capability to assist the veterinary team. This involves the practice of restraint and manipulation of all breeds of equine. The role is physical in nature and can be completed as part of a team or by lone working. Due to this, previous experience working in this environment is desirable as it requires you to be responsible for your own health and safety and that of the animals you are providing care for.
